Dogs and pets
Understandably, everyone would like to take their dog, and some even their cat, with them on holiday.
Travelling by car is very time-consuming and on the ferry you may have to lock your pet in a small kennel on deck. Take your own padlock for this kennel.
Some ferry companies allow pets on the tween decks, but you can’t rely on this.
As a rule, you are not allowed to take pets into the cabin at all.
It is now possible to book a crossing with a special dog cabin with almost all ferry companies. You can then spend the night here together with your dog.
In addition to the normal transport costs for your pet, there is an extra charge of 30-50 EUR.
For some years now, there have also been accommodation providers that are specially tailored to holidaymakers with dogs.
You can find offers here:
For the entry of dogs and cats, you need an EU pet passport with proof of a valid rabies vaccination. This vaccination must have been administered at least 21 days before the start of the trip.
The entry of puppies is only permitted from the age of 15 weeks and with a valid rabies vaccination.
Since 03.07.2011, all pets are required to have a chip. However, if your pet was tattooed before this date, this tattoo is still valid even without a chip.
A leash and muzzle for your dog must be carried at all times when travelling.
You may only bring in other animals if you present a certificate of origin confirming that the animal has been examined by a veterinarian.
For protected species under the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, you must present a CITES certificate.
Dogs are not allowed in all public buildings (museums, banks, restaurants…). Most hotels and campsites also refuse to allow pets. You should therefore enquire about this when booking.
Dogs are also prohibited on the beaches.
However, if you take your dog for a walk on a secluded beach in the low season, you won’t have any problems. However, you should stay away from well-frequented beaches.
In the meantime, there are now several designated dog beaches.
Here you will find a list of these beaches and also the conditions and rules of conduct for dog owners.
A health risk for your pet are parasites such as leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies and ticks, which can lurk in the meadows, especially in spring.
Under these conditions, it may even be better to have your dog or cat looked after at home by relatives or friends. You are sure to find a lovingly run boarding kennel.
