Arborea

Sinis Peninsula

On the Sinis Peninsula

The Tirso River and its alluvial soil form a fertile and watery plain.

Under Mussolini, several large-scale agricultural projects were developed. Reservoirs regulated the water supply, the malaria-infested swamps were drained and settlements were built. The central town of Arborea was founded in 1928 under the name Mussolinia.

Many farms also offer agritourismo.

On the Sinis peninsula you will find fantastic beaches of white, coarse quartz sand.
The lagoon lakes are home to numerous species of fish and many birds. Thousands of flamingos spend the winter here, and many also nest.

The area was already settled in pre-Roman times. The Punic founded the port city of Tharros, whose ruins are among the most important archaeological sights on the island.

Today, Oristano is the centre of the region. The city is the youngest provincial capital of Sardinia.
