Gallura

Capo d'Orso

At Capo d’Orso

Gallura covers the entire north-east of Sardinia.
In the former times, the area was populated almost exclusively by flocks of sheep and their shepherds, but today it is the island’s most important region for tourism.
In the 1960s, the holiday destination of the Costa Smeralda (“Emerald Coast”) arose here.

The coast is of an extraordinary, wild beauty, for example at Capo Testa near Santa Teresa. From here there is also a ferry connection to Corsica, which is only 12 km away.

Other places of interest along the coast include the archipelago of La Maddalena, Capo d’Orso and the Punta Sardegna viewpoint.

Inland, you can visit numerous prehistoric megalithic tombs and nuraghi.
The vegetation is characterised by waist-high maquis and cork oak forests. Geologically, granite predominates here.

The most important town in inner Gallura is Tempio Pausania. Here and in nearby Calangianus is the centre of the Sardinian cork industry.

Monte Limbara, the local mountain of Tempio, is an interesting destination for a trip. It offers a beautiful view over the whole region – sometimes even as far as Corsica. You can drive by car nearly to the top.
