Cagliari region
About 250,000 people live in the capital of Sardinia. If you include the region of Cagliari, there are more than 400,000 – about a quarter of all Sardinia’s inhabitants.
Cagliari is the centre of the island in almost every respect.
The government of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia is located here. Most industry has settled in the greater city area and almost every major Sardinian company has its headquarters here.
Cagliari is particularly attractive to young Sardinians. There are now more than 30,000 students at the university.
While the modern parts of the city are hectic and a labyrinth of bypasses and arterial roads crisscross the periphery, life in the centre of Cagliari is quite contemplative.
The old town is particularly worth seeing – the Castello and Via Roma by the sea with its beautiful houses and arcades.
When you arrive in Cagliari by ferry, you are already in the middle of the city, which shows its most beautiful side at this point.
At the beginning of May, the Sagra di Sant’ Efisio takes place here – the biggest festival on the island.
